What is wellness?
There are many definitions
The WHO defines it as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
The McKinley Health Center defines it as “a state of optimal well-being that is oriented towards maximizing an individual’s potential.” “This is a life-long process of moving towards enhancing your physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and environmental well-being.
The National Wellness Institute defines it as “a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.
UC Davis in California defines it as: “an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.” It is “a dynamic process of change and growth.” They differentiate “eight dimensions of wellness: occupational, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, physical, social and intellectual. Each dimension of wellness is interrelated with another. Each dimension is equally vital in the pursuit of optimal health. One can reach an optimal level of wellness by understanding how to maintain and optimize each of the dimensions of wellness.”
The Herbert Wellness Center at the University of Miami states that “Wellness is the dynamic process of becoming aware of, taking responsibility for and making choices that directly contribute to one’s well-being … it is the integration of body, mind and spirit and the ongoing development of one’s own meaning in life. “
All of the above are correct. They each describe a different area of wellness.
Health is a state of being, a goal to be achieved and maintained; wellness is a lifestyle…a way of living that strives to balance all of the above aspects. Health is a body and mind free from disease; wellness is an active concept which is ongoing throughout a lifetime.
An added aspect of physical wellness is obtaining optimal levels of the many hormones in our body. Correcting hormone deficiencies and personally finding the pre-designed harmony of hormones is essential to feeling well. Finding and maintaining the proper balance in all the dimensions of wellness is the key to being and staying well. A sense of well-being is achieved when we maintain the harmony of the correct chords in every dimension of our being.
